According to John Ramage, "We are always trying to recover the original sense of a text in the act of interpreting it" (140). To me this is very helpful to consider when thinking about how I want to structure my Visual Story Project. Even though we are primarily showing images we are reading them as if they are everyday texts, so when trying to think about how I wanted to do my project I tried to think as if I had no idea what my pictures were supposed to represent. So I thought about how they would be interpreted by my viewers and then thought how the organization pattern of the photographs fit together. Then I tried to think if in my interpretation as an outsider I was able to understand what the photographs were “saying”.
However, while I think that I better understand the concepts that I need to use so that my photographs are interpreted the way I want them to be as a text, so I need to use actual linguistic messages like Barthes explains.
“There were the various forms of commercial photography: advertising, publicity textbook illustration, studio portraiture, scientific and technical” (Malcolm). Technically I feel as if most of my photographs would fall under the category of studio portraits, which I think will solidify my concept better; because at first it looks as if the pictures are actual couple photographs or engagement pictures that would be done after a marriage proposal.
There were some concepts that were discussed in Malcolm that I feel are important to consider when putting together this presentation “Szarkowski's idea of plucking the photographs from their familiar contexts as newspaper pictures or snapshots or art photographs and arranging them according to how they might exemplify and illuminate five "characteristics and problems that have seemed inherent in the medium," which Szarkowski had isolated and named "The Thing Itself," "The Detail:' "The Frame:' "Time:' and "Vantage Point””. The idea that you would take these photos and place them in a certain order for one is the exemplification of what we are trying to do with this project. The Thing Itself, for my photos is the young woman, the detail is that she is schizophrenic and having a delusion, the frame is the ‘date’ that she goes on with the man she believes is her lover but actually her doctor, the time is the dream-state that she is in, and I’m still trying to figure out what the vantage point would be.
